Tolerance stack and takt time

Automotive supply work punishes variation harder than almost any other market. Tolerance stack in a weldment, a hole pattern that drifts a few thousandths, an edge condition that changes mid-run — any of it can put a shipment on hold and a quality engineer in your building.

Prototype and low-volume aftermarket work has the opposite problem: constant changeover. Hard tooling doesn't make sense at that volume, so shops fall back on manual layout and secondary machining, and every design revision restarts the clock.

Both situations get expensive at the welding station, where inconsistent blanks turn into fit-up time your takt time never budgeted for.

Tooling-free blanks and consistent weldments

Fiber laser cutting is tooling-free. A design revision is a program change, not a die change — which makes prototype, service part, and aftermarket runs viable without an amortization argument.

For production, consistent laser-cut blanks feed downstream stations predictably. Where weldment volume justifies it, robotic or laser welding cells take the variation out of the joint too: narrower heat-affected zones, less distortion on thin material, and far less grinding before finish.

Suppliers typically run an enclosed shuttle-table laser for blanking volume and add a press brake and welding cell to keep the whole assembly in-house and under one quality system.

The obvious savings is secondary finishing. The one that gets a plant manager's attention is quality cost — sorts, containments, and rework hours that vanish when the incoming blank stops varying.

Speed to first part matters too. When a customer sends a revision, being able to cut a corrected part the same day is a real competitive position.
